With limited manpower from 2nd due, Co. 1 was requested to provide an engine and assist as 2nd due, which added R-5 (Forest) to fill the RIT assignment. E-13 (w/4) and W-82 (w/2) arrived to find a single story wood frame residence with heavy smoke and fire showing from the "Alpha" side making it a working fire. E-13's crew made the stretch and began an aggressive interior attack as Division 1. W-13 (w/6) arrived and the officer, AC Dooley, established the command and had his crew assist Division 1 with interior operations. W-1 (w/6) arrived and secured the water source and supplied W-13. R-5 arrived and established the RIT on side "Charlie" of the structure. While 3 members from Co. 13 were starting overhaul after the fire had been knocked down, a "Mayday" was transmitted at 0717 by Capt. Minnix due to a roof collapse and 1 firefighter down, which activated the RIT. Capt. Minnix and FF C. Scott began pulling the injured and disoriented firefighter out and were met by the RIT who got him outside to awaiting medics from Medic 14-13. After the Mayday was clear, Companies 13, 1, 8, 12, 5 and 9 performed an extensive overhaul to bring the incident under control. Company 13 remained on scene until approx. 1100. Two Company 13 members involved in the Mayday were transported and treated for minor injuries and later released around 1600. Both firemen are bruised and sore but are recovering well. An excellent job was done by all Companies on scene to bring the incident under control and safely executing the Mayday.

Around 0230, Bedford Communications alerted Companies 13 (1st Due), 8 (Moneta) Second Due, 1 (Bedford) as RIT, Squad 4, and RS-2 to Strawberry Hill Ct. (in Chamblissburg), for a structure fire. E-13 (w/5) arrived first to find a 2 story private dwelling fully involved and began stretching lines to set up for a defensive attack and passed the command to W-13's officer (AC Dooley). W-13 arrived and established relay pumping operations with E-13. Due to the amount of fire, Command requested a tanker task force for water supply operations which added T-12 (Hardy) and T-19 (Shady Grove) to the incident. Companies 13 and 1 performed a primary search of the residence which were negative, but were hampered due to a floor collapse. Personnel from 13, 1, 8, and 12 worked together to bring the fire under control and undergo an extensive overhaul before clearing around 0700. Prior to the arrival of E-13, 5 residents managed to evacuate safely, unfortunately with only the clothes they were wearing. This being said, there were several kids along with two adults in the home and as mentioned before, all they escaped with were the clothes they were wearing . If you would like to donate any items to the this very unfortunate family, we have several phone numbers to family members who are trying to organize donations. They are: Lisa 540-330-5730 and Megan 540-915-6238. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Campbell family who were well known by many of the Company 13 members.

MONTHLY TRAINING - VEHICLE EXTRICATION
Thursday, January 21, 2010

Company 13 held it's monthly training drill Thursday night and this month's topic was vehicle extrication. We were provided with two cars to train with. The weather wasn't cooperating very well so as always, we had to improvise. We placed both vehicles in the apparatus bays and had some excellent training. The newer members focused on some basic extrication techniques on one of the vehicles while the more experienced members did some more advanced techniques on the other. With over 20 members present, everyone had some good hands on training.
