Thursday, July 9, 2009 - Around 08:00 hours Co.13 received a call for a Chlorine spill at the water treatment plant near the Roanoke Co./Bedford Co line. W- 13 arrived at the entrance gate and staged. Command (AC Glidden) got a briefing from the employee about the leak and notified Haz Mat 40(Stevens) that this was going to be a regional haz-mat team response. Co.13 secured the scene and made sure all residences were outside the half mile evacuation zone. The Roanoke-Fire EMS haz mat response team arrived and Co.13 assisted them in setting up the decon station and doning their Class A suits. The haz mat team made their entry and capped the leak. The team deconed themselves on the site and did not need the decon station so Co.13 disassembled the decon station and assisted the team in removing their Class A suits. After a small debriefing, Co.13 cleared after being on scene for 5 hours. Units operating on scene: W-13, MP-13, B13-A, BCoFR Medic 14-13 and RS-2, Roanoke City Fire-EMS Haz Mat 1 and Brush Truck 1, Roanoke County Battalion 1, Battalion 5 and Chief 1, Bedford Haz Mat 40, and VDEM.
